On Saturday, October 25, 2014, Iberostate Praia do Forte promoted a very special event in tribute to the world renowned movement in the fight against breast cancer: Pink October.

The event took place from 11am-5pm at the Iberostate Praia do Forte sales stand, marking the start of the Iberostate Series of Lectures (which will cover themes linked to health, quality of life, fashion, and behavior), with a lecture from Mastologist André Vinícius Moraes Dias, following a partnership agreement with the Núcleo da Mama clinic (Salvador/Bahia unit). Dr. André Dias is a renowned doctor and full member of the Brazilian Mastology Society; he spoke about the main issues relating to breast cancer care and prevention.

The Pink October movement began in 1997, in the cities of Yuba and Lodi in California, in the United States, where several public monuments were illuminated in pink. The aim was to raise public awareness about the need to prevent this disease, which was, and still is, on the international rise. As well as the illumination, other events were promoted in the cities, such as walks, runs, fashion shows with breast cancer survivors, etc.

The movement increased in popularity over the years, motivating and uniting different people and nations in support of this extremely noble cause, until the pink illumination was understood all over the world, as well as the pink ribbon that is the emblem of the cause.

In Brazil, the first initiative in support of Pink October, on October 2, 2002, saw the Obelisk of São Paulo illuminated pink. The movement then grew further in stature and several other important monuments were illuminated pink, including Christ the Redeemer (Rio de Janeiro). All this was organized by the Brazilian Federation of Philanthropic Institutions in Support of Breast Health (FEMAMA, for its Portuguese acronym).

It is with great pride that Iberostate sponsored this event in support of such an important movement, which goes hand in hand with the ideas of well-being and quality of life that underpin the group's philosophy. Come and check out the many other initiatives of vital social importance.
